Throughout most of the show, Damon wears his jacket. The character of Damon has a pale complexion with light blue eyes and brown hair. He also often wears a black shirt. For the television show, he appears to be around 25 years old.

Character History:

Season 1:

Personality:

At the start of the show, Damon’s personality is largely the polar opposite of his brother Stefan. At times, Damon can actually appear to be arrogant. It is said that Damon has sociopathic tendencies, going from charming one minute to highly dangerous the next. He often doesn’t show remorse for any of his killings. He likes to play with people and often causes grief to those around him, but mostly his brother Stefan. Damon is more powerful that his brother and often gets his way. It is possible that Damon learned his behavior from Katherine.

However, as the show continues you begin to notice that all Damon wants is acceptance, which is something he never really had when he was a human. Damon has been on his own for the last 145 years, becoming very lonely and isolated. To compensate he has a very dark sense of humor. In the episode, ‘Children of the Damned’, he threatens to turn Elena and calls her ‘our girlfriend’ in front of his brother, which likely indicates that he has the same feelings.

In the episode ‘Isobel’ there is additional evidence when Damon goes to visit Isobel and threatens, her to avoid Elena and later Isobel tells her daughter that he’s in love with her. During the finale, ‘Founder’s Day’, Damon and Anna are captured along with most of the tomb vampires after being exposed by the Johnathan Gilbert device. They are placed in the basement of Grayson Gilbert’s old business after being weakened by an injection of Vervain. Damon witnesses Anna’s death when John Gilbert stakes her.

Stefan rescues Damon as the building is set on fire and then Damon goes to tell Jeremy that Anna died and that he tried to save her. Damon also apologizes for what he did to Vicki, admitting it was the wrong thing to do. Jeremy says he learned from Anna that vampires have the ability to turn off their emotions and Damon admits this, but says that life isn’t easier if a person becomes a vampire. It hurts whether someone is a person or not, but if the person is a vampire they just don’t have to feel bad about it. Damon says he did it for a while and life was easier then.

Later, Damon is leaving the Gilbert home when Elena returns. Damon admits that when he first came to town he wanted to destroy it, but then he found that after the events of the Founder’s Day celebration he wants to protect it. He admits that he’s not a hero and he doesn’t go anything good because it’s not in him. The good is reserved for Stefan, Elena and Bonnie. Bonnie worked with Stefan to rescue him because Elena wanted it, which means that Elena was responsible for Bonnie deciding he was worth saving. Damon kisses her cheek at first and then they have a passionate kiss just before Jenna opens the door. They suddenly stop and Jenna tells Elena to come inside as the glares at Damon. After Elena comes inside, Jenna asks Elena what she’s doing. Elena doesn’t want to discuss the issue. Outside, Damon stares at the door for a moment and then touches his lips as he leaves. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that Damon actually kissed Katherine and not Elena, since the real Elena arrives home telling Stefan that someone took her things from school.

Background:

Damon is between 170-175 years old, is of Italian descent and originally comes from Mystic Falls. Damon apparently hasn’t visited town in awhile. The father, Giuseppe Salvatore, was a widower who was a vampire hunter and often disapproved of his oldest son. When Stefan talked about sympathy for vampires, Damon began hating him. Giuseppe also realized that Katherine was likely a vampire. After drinking Stefan’s Vervain-laced blood, Katherine was captured by the local townspeople. Damon placed the blame on Stefan and has never forgiven him until Stefan asked for his help to rescue Elena when she was kidnapped by Anna. However, Damon likely still loves his brother and just has a hard time showing it because their attraction to Katherine got in the way.

Character Relationships:

Stefan Salvatore:

The relationship between Damon and his brother is very complicated. It is implied that the two got along fine in the past, but something, possibly Katherine, caused a rift between them. Stefan seems to dislike his brother, while Damon has promised an ‘eternity of misery’ to Stefan. However, Damon has also tried to bring out the darker side of his brother, maybe in an attempt to get even with his brother. In the episode, ‘Fool Me Once’, Stefan reveals that he knows why Damon hates him, because Katherine was taken away because of Stefan and Damon was left devastated. Stefan apologizes and Damon accepts.

In the episode, ‘Let the Right One In’ Stefan is kidnapped by the vampires in the tomb. Damon puts aside the hatred he has for his brother because of Elena and they are able to rescue him, but after he has become hooked on human blood again. Then in the episode, ‘Blood Brothers’ Stefan brings a young girl to Damon after he has become a vampire and urges him to drink. Damon hesitantly gives in and completes his vampire transformation by drinking. Later, Damon reveals to Stefan that he would have rather died because he wanted Katherine for himself. In the ‘Isobel’ episode, Stefan confronts him about Isobel’s revelation that Damon loves Elena and says that history won’t repeat itself. However, Damon says that once Elena learns the truth he will be there for her if she needs someone.

Giuseppe Salvatore:

During flashbacks in the episode ‘Children of the Damned’, we get a good view of the relationship between Giuseppe and his oldest son, Damon. They appear to have a strained relationship since Giuseppe expresses displeasure that he has deserted the Confederate Army. However, Stefan defends his brother by saying it was his decision. Giuseppe reminds them that they are living in dangerous times and Damon gets their father to admit that he is talking about vampires. After drinking the Vervain in Stefan’s blood, Katherine is taken away and Damon tries to stop them, but Giuseppe says that Katherine would have turned them. Damon admits that he wanted to be turned, possibly in reference to the fact that he wouldn’t have to live with the constant criticism from his father.

Elena Gilbert:

Elena is almost identical to the Katherine that both brothers used to know. Damon is interested in Elena because of her likeness to Katherine and because it upsets his brother. After a car crash, Damon saves Elena and takes her on a trip to Georgia where he starts to bond with her. However, Damon is double-crossed by Stefan and Elena so he forces her to drink his blood and makes threats to turn her into a vampire in order to further Stefan’s emotional pain.

During the episode, ‘A Few Good Men’ Damon tells Alaric during the bachelor raffle that he found Elena’s birth mother in North Carolina two years before and that she thinks he was the one that killed her, causing her to hate him. However, in the episode ‘Let the Right One In’ Elena works with Damon to rescue Stefan after he is kidnapped and tortured. Then in the episode ‘Under Control’, Elena goes to him for advice when she is concerned about Stefan’s behavior.

During ‘Miss Mystic Falls’ Damon tells Elena that Stefan has returned to drinking human blood and fills in by dancing with her after Stefan disappears. Later they are able to capture Stefan and lock him in the dungeon in the basement. In ‘Isobel’, Damon warns Isobel to avoid Elena and Isobel later says that Damon is in love with her. Damon tells Stefan that Elena is the only friend he’s ever had and once Stefan tells the truth, she is welcome to come talk with him whenever she wants. In the final episode, ‘Founder’s Day’ Damon admits his feelings to Elena and gives her a passionate kiss. However, it is then revealed that Damon actually kissed Katherine.

Katherine Pierce:

Both Stefan and Damon knew Katherine in the past. In fact, the issue of Katherine is a very sore point for them. The episode ‘Lost Girls’ reveals that Katherine is the one who started to turn them into vampires because she is one herself. Their transformation was later completed when they were both shot trying to rescue her from the tomb.

In the episode, ‘History Repeating’ Damon states he was never compelled by Katherine and says he knows everything. After failing to find Katherine in the episode ‘Fool Me Once’, Anna tells Damon that Katherine didn’t love him and he is left feeling devastated. Since Damon is a lot like Katherine, it is possible that she had an effect on his personality. When Damon arrives at Isobel’s house in the episode ‘Isobel’ he orders her to leave Elena alone and says Katherine has to come get the device herself if she wants it. Damon calls her a bitch, which means he is starting to accept her true feelings for him.

During the finale, Damon meets Elena as he leaves the Gilbert home. He admits to her that he doesn’t do anything good and finds he wants to protect the town from danger rather than destroy it. Bonnie and Stefan help rescue him from the burning building and he tells Elena that she was responsible for making them decide he was worth saving. Damon gives her a kiss on the cheek and then they share a passionate kiss before Jenna interrupts them. After Elena is in the house, Damon touches his mouth before leaving. At the end of the episode it is discovered that Elena is actually Katherine and she is the one Damon originally thought was Elena.

Caroline Forbes:

Initially Damon played hard to get with Caroline, but then started to pick up on her after the Night of the Comet Festival in town. Eventually they become intimate, but Damon seems to use her mostly as a snack and to get into Elena’s life so he can annoy Stefan. Damon attacks Caroline at the end of the episode ‘Family Ties’, but then still has control of her mind in ‘You’re Undead to Me’ when he leads her to the boarding house dungeon to release him. He compels her again in the episode ’162 Candles’ in order to organize a party at the Mystic Grill for Stefan and to get the crystal from Bonnie. When Caroline doesn’t get the crystal, he insults her and calls her shallow.

Vicki Donovan:

Vicki is just one of a few people who have survived Damon’s attacks. After attacking her in the woods, Damon leaves her alive, but messes with her memories afterwards in order to annoy Stefan. After this is unsuccessful, he removes the event and his attack from Vicki’s memory, leaving her unaffected. However, after he escapes he attacks her again because of starvation. Vicki is stubborn and continues to cling to life, so Damon returns to the boardinghouse with her. During the daylight he is stuck in the boardinghouse with her since he doesn’t have is ring, so he decides to give some of his blood to her in order to heal her and he can have some fun with her to pass the time. They have fun and seem to get along well; Vicki finds the high from Damon’s blood to be similar to drugs. While they are together, Vicki tells a lot of her problems and insecurities to Damon. He appears to listen to them and doesn’t try to tell her to be quite when she talks which is uncharacteristic of him. Damon decides that to help with her self-esteem issues he is going to have her become a vampire so he snaps her neck and starts the transformation process. In the finale, Stefan reveals to Jeremy that both Damon and he were responsible for her death and apologizes to him, admitting it was wrong.
